What the heck is "social media?"

Ever write a product review on Amazon.com? Participate in a community forum or bulletin board? Write or comment on a blog? Do you have a link to your website or blog in your email signature?

But that was for fun... How does it help my business?

Social media is about connecting with people. These and newer forms of social media such as Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn can help spread the word about your website, your blog, and your business.

Social media can be an incredibly effective and inexpensive way to make people aware of who you are and what you do, about new things happening in your business, new products you're providing. It can be much more personal and spontaneous than email newsletters, and it builds relationships with your customers and those you want to be your customers.

People get to know, like, and trust you... the first steps to becoming your lifelong customers.

That looks like a LOT of work. Why should I bother?

Well, yes... it is a lot of work. Many business owners don't have time to sit at their computers all day and monitor the firehose stream of Twitter feeds to make sure no one is saying bad things about them. Creative artists would rather be in the studio creating art, not reading blog posts and Facebook.

But part of controlling your business image, in addition to getting out the good news, is staying on top of bad news, bad perceptions, and bad press. You have to quickly be able to counter with your side of the story.
